May 28, 2010 Mojave in Astoria, NY

This is the bathroom at Mojave, a “Mexican” restaurant in Astoria under the Ditmars Stop on the N/W line.  It’s overpriced and the food isn’t great but they have a full cocktails menu.

Now for the bathrooms!  Clean, the sink was wet, and the feng shui of the layout made the room seem small and clinical, so I wasn’t about to spend a lot of time chillin’ in there to think, primp or just relax from the noise of the restaurant.  But, the sink was interesting:  it was a small half spherical stainless steel bowl recessed into the side of the counter.  Just big enough for two little hands to wash themselves.  I loved that asymmetry of the counter, but the perfection of the bowl of the sink.  There was a label on the trash – if you have to label it, you’ve selected the wrong receptacle!  The paper towel “dispenser” was a throwaway, which was sad considering how awesome the sink was, but all in all, it was clean and stocked, and a nice reprieve from the painful hip-ness of the restaurant, even if just for a moment.

About amyontheotherside

I've always been attentive to the public restrooms I've used...the good, the bad and the ugly! They all have their uniqueness and charms. I explore these on my blog, "From in the Can". In the rest of my life (outside of the bathroom) I have just moved from NYC to Virginia and am chronicling the experience in the "Experiment in a New Life" blog.
