May 29, 2010 Sweet Afton, Astoria, NY

Sweet Afton, the dark wood and candle lit bar off 30th Ave has great atmosphere, bad service, an appealing menu (mac and cheese, grilled cheese…) and pickles.  And pickle shots.  And pickle martinis.

The Bathroom was functional, clean, not huge, but enough space to move in.  Nice granite tile and a picture rail on the wall.  The highlight of the bathroom was the cool wooden piece that surrounds the trashcan; it’s cool and attractive.  On the other hand, it has been dropped into the corner, taking up a lot of space in a bathroom where the ingredients are right, but no thought was given to their arrangement.  There is no flow in the room.  However, if I were in a situation where I needed to take a break, think, and look at myself in the mirror, this would have been a comfortable enough place to do that.

One last note – the bar should think about investing in some sort of holder/dispenser for their toilet paper.  It kind of spoils the classy interior when you’ve given so little thought to the functioning of the room that you have to just stick the roll on the side of the trash cover.

About amyontheotherside

I've always been attentive to the public restrooms I've used...the good, the bad and the ugly! They all have their uniqueness and charms. I explore these on my blog, "From in the Can". In the rest of my life (outside of the bathroom) I have just moved from NYC to Virginia and am chronicling the experience in the "Experiment in a New Life" blog.
