Buon Amici, Williamsburg, VA

Well, Buon Amici’s has decent food, but over and over again, the service has been terrible; my family finally stopped going there after realizing that we were always going to get cold food, wrong orders, and rude waitstaff.  The bathroom tells the same story:  good idea, pathetic execution…but it makes for a great photo!

I am in love with the incongruities in this bathroom.  Someone had the cool (in my opinion) idea to put some lights under the translucent sink.  While it’s not the most professional installation, as you can see the two little florescent bars clearly under the countertop, it still makes a pretty color through the blue, sparkly plastic.  HOWEVER, why on earth would you spend any time or money on an effect like this and then leave the power cords drooping out below the sink!  So, the first incongruity is the trailer-trash-faux-elegance of the top of the sink against the stark green light spilling out and highlighting the plumbing and the sloppy cables underneath!  The other great juxtaposition pits the original decor of the rustic (and cheap, dusty) fake sunflowers against the modern (and careless, amateur) backlighting of the sink.  Why, on your way out after installing these little lights, would you not grab those dust covered, stale, irrelevant flowers and chuck them?!  Obviously, the addition of the mod lighting effect had no effect on the style of the rest of the restroom; the rustic tile, Vogue poster, and flowers — all of which are totally appropriate for an “Italian” restaurant — now feel outmoded.

To complete the comically delightful bathroom, use of the sink not only produced a stream of water, but a loud squealing sound like a locomotive with its breaks  locked up.  At least the diners in the dining room can be sure of hand-washing.

Occasionally-good pizza, reliably incompetent service, and an amusing bathroom.  Actually, it was totally worth the trip.

About amyontheotherside

I've always been attentive to the public restrooms I've used...the good, the bad and the ugly! They all have their uniqueness and charms. I explore these on my blog, "From in the Can". In the rest of my life (outside of the bathroom) I have just moved from NYC to Virginia and am chronicling the experience in the "Experiment in a New Life" blog.
